Safety and security benefits
The capital project seeks to improve building entrance security at all four school buildings and parking lot safety at the Coxsackie and Athens school campuses.
Planned safety and security improvements include the installation of cameras inside and outside all schools as well as replacing all interior door hardware with intruder lock sets. Fire alarm, building access, PA and phone systems would be replaced.
The project would also address traffic flow and parking lot safety at the Athens and Coxsackie school campuses. This includes wider sidewalks and separate loops for bus and vehicle traffic. Here, traffic patterns will be adjusted to separate buses, cars and pedestrians.
The proposal includes renovating the high school to create more modern, flexible and collaborative classrooms for students. This would allow us to better group or cluster this learning space – which was originally constructed in 1953 – by program areas.
At the high school the auditorium, art rooms, band and choral rooms, technology rooms and the library would be renovated. Some classrooms would be relocated and clustered to provide more efficient and effective use of existing space. The technology classrooms, or current “shop” area, would be upgraded into a learning lab.
This proposal would allow us to construct space and facilities that more closely matches the “STEAM” (science, technology, engineering, art and math) instructional programming we now offer our students (and space they would find in college and the workplace). Here, students would learn hands-on skills in areas such as robotics, engineering, design and programming.
Track & Field Renovations
The proposal includes renovating and widening the 26-year-old asphalt track with new resilient surfacing to allow all sports including soccer and field hockey to play within the track as well as community groups. Stadium lights, a new scoreboard, sound system and a video platform is also included. The playing field will be replaced and include a sprinkler system and full drainage that will result in a safer natural grass field.
