Coxsackie-Athens Middle School students had a chance to step out of the classroom and enjoy a little Friday fun during the Black Cat Carnival!
The carnival gave our 5th and 6th graders the opportunity to play games, win prizes, enjoy some snacks, and spend time with their friends. Students could purchase tickets to play games or use them to buy food, candy, popcorn and even get their face painted. Every student received 10 free tickets to get started, and students who brought in non-perishable food donations received some extra tickets to use throughout the event.
There were plenty of games to choose from, including dice rolling, penny toss, ring toss, whack-a-mole, pick your poison, home run, Plinko, fish for a prize, football toss, and the Royal Flush, where students had to get a roll of toilet paper into a toilet. And, of course, one of the biggest hits of the day was the chance to pie a fellow student in the face!
For just a few tickets, students could spin the wheel and hope it landed on "Pie." If it did, they got to put a plate full of whipped cream into a classmate's face. Needless to say, students had a lot of fun with this one!
Events like the Black Cat Carnival are a great way to give students the opportunity to get out of the classroom, have fun, and connect with one another. Student engagement is an important part of creating a school environment where students enjoy coming to school, build strong relationships with their peers, and develop the social skills and confidence they will carry with them beyond the classroom.
One of the best parts of the carnival was seeing our older students step up to help the younger students. Our student volunteers helped run games, supervise activities, and make sure our 5th and 6th graders had a great time. That kind of student leadership and support is what makes a school community special. It gives students the chance to learn from one another, build connections across grade levels, and see that they all have an important role to play in making their school a great place to be.
We want to give a huge thank you to the Middle School Student Council, Stacey Kelly, and Kelly Ulion for putting this event together. We also want to recognize Garrett Mackey and Jillian Field for volunteering their time to help with setup and supervise our volunteers.
And, of course, thank you to all of our student volunteers who helped make the Black Cat Carnival such a special event for our younger students!
