In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, local firefighters from the Athens and Coxsackie fire departments visited our elementary students to share important fire safety tips and help them learn how to stay safe in an emergency.
During the assemblies, students learned what to do if a fire or other emergency occurs, how to prepare ahead of time, and where to go to stay safe. Firefighters also shared tips on how to help keep smoke from entering a room while waiting for help to arrive.

One of the most important lessons was learning not to be afraid of firefighters during an emergency. Firefighters came into classrooms wearing their full protective gear to show students what they might look like in a real emergency. Seeing the equipment up close helped students understand that even though firefighters may look different when wearing their gear, they are there to help and keep them safe.

After the assemblies, students had the opportunity to get an up-close look at some of the tools and vehicles local first responders use to save lives. Firefighters, EMTs, and local police officers brought their emergency vehicles to Coxsackie Elementary, giving students a chance to explore the trucks, see the equipment firsthand, and learn more about the important work these community helpers do every day. Students had a blast asking questions, discovering new tools, and getting a better understanding of how these teams work together to protect our community.

At Edward J. Arthur Elementary, students had the exciting opportunity to visit the local firehouse and see firsthand where firefighters work and prepare for emergencies. They got a closer look at the firehouse, learned more about the equipment and vehicles firefighters use, and got a better understanding of what goes on behind the scenes when a call comes in. This hands-on experience gave students another opportunity to learn from the people who help keep our community safe every day!

At Coxsackie-Athens, we believe preparing our students for the future goes beyond what they learn in the classroom. Teaching students how to stay safe, respond in an emergency, and know when to ask for help is just as important as their academic education. We want our students to feel confident and prepared for whatever life may throw their way, and experiences like these help give them the knowledge and skills they need.
A big thank you to our elementary school staff for helping make these important lessons possible, and to the Athens and Coxsackie fire departments, local EMTs, and police officers for taking the time to visit our students. We appreciate everything you do to keep our students and community safe!
